NPS teams up with Rajamangala University of Technical Isaan to research on turning fly ash into concrete blocks, to promote the Circular Economy and minimize the environmental impacts

26 October 2023

National Power Supply Public Company Limited joins hand with Rajamangala University of Technical Isaan on the research and development of the construction material with fly ash to make concrete block as an alternative to bring the waste from electricity generation, decrease the cost of eliminating fly ash, and continue to expand the knowledge of producing the construction material to the community in the future.

Mr. Thanongsak Srisongmuang, Executive Vice President - Operation and Technology division of National Power Supply Public Company Limited or NPS welcomes Asst. Prof. Dr. Kiatsuda Somna, the professor of Civil Engineering Studies, Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Technology, Rajamangala University of Technical Isaan, and the research team to visit the prototype production area of construction material from fly ash, located in the Company area in Srimahaphote district, Prachinburi province.

Mr. Thanongsak mentioned the collaboration project between the private sector and the education institute that the project will play a major role in increasing the value and make use of fly ash, which normally was the waste from the electricity generation and needs to be eliminated. Integrated Research Center Company Limited, a subsidiary of NPS, joins the research with Rajamangala University of Technical Isaan. We have been granted supporting funds from Program Management Unit for Competitiveness (PMUC) for the formula development of the construction material production composed of fly ash, such as Solid non loadbearing concrete masonry units, Interlocking concrete paving blocks, and curb stones.

“This research is a solution to recycle the waste from the production, to reduce the cost in elimination of fly ash, and to be a model for other construction materials which will be an income for the subsidiaries in the future. This is another research and development of the Water and Waste Management Division of IRC that we are proud of because it is for the benefit of the organization, society, country, and especially environment, which is the concept that NPS focuses on consistently.

Asst. Prof. Dr. Kiatsuda explained the process of the research that the team brings fly ash from NPS power plants as cement replacement in the construction material production, because fly ash’s property is a pozzolan which is the bonding agent similar to cement.

“We bring cement and fly ash as a bonding agent, mixing with crushed dust, sand, and water, shape into the product and leave them for up to 28 days, then we test the products according to its standard. From the experiment, we found that Solid non loadbearing concrete masonry units can consist of fly ash up to 11.7% per block, Interlocking concrete paving blocks can consist of fly ash 14.3% per block, and curb stones can consist of fly ash up to 9.2% per block. The result of the strength test of all of the products is qualified by Thai Industrial Standard (TIS.) of each product. It can be said that fly ash has a binding property similar to cement. The most important thing is that it can replace cement in the construction material production up to 50-70%, which is the most beneficial thing that we can utilize the use of fly ash.

After the completion, the group of professors from Rajamangala University of Technical Isaan submitted the research to Seoul International Invention Fair 2022 (SIIF 2022) Competition in November 2022 under the name of Green Pavement from Hight Volume Fly Ash, and was rewarded with the Bronze Medal award. In February 2023, we expanded the study further by educating the knowledge of the construction materials production to NPS staff members. Moreover, the Company has plans to educate the community around power plants area, the construction material manufacturers, contractors, and schools that are interested in the production so that all the related sectors will see the potential use of fly ash that was once a waste, but is now valuable and can make a living.
